The winners of tonight's clash at the National Stadium in Warsaw will face Spain in Sunday's final, with Germany favourites with the bookmakers to win.
These two sides have met on seven previous occasions in competitive games, and perhaps surprisingly, Germany are yet to beat the Azzurri.
Of the seven games, which came at either World Cups or European Championships, Italy have won three, with the other four ending in a draw.
Italy beat the Germans in the World Cup semi-finals in 1970 and 2006.
Their two previous European Championship clashes both ended in draws at the group stages; 1-1 in 1988, and 0-0 in 1996. The Euro 96 result eliminated Italy from the tournament.
Their last meeting was that 2006 World Cup semi-final meeting, which Italy won 2-0.
Although Germany striker Miroslav Klose admits the defeat was a "trauma", coach Joachim Loew, who was assistant to Jurgen Klinsmann at the time, has refused to dwell on the past.
"In football there is no such thing as revenge," said Loew ahead of tonight's showdown.
"The past plays absolutely no role for us or for our young players who may know things only from history."
Will Italy record yet another win tonight, or can Germany continue their 100 per cent record at Euro 2012 and reach Sunday's final?
