The winners of tonight's clash at the Donbass Arena in Donetsk will face either Germany or Italy in Sunday's final, with defending champions Spain favourites with the bookmakers to win.
This will be the 35th meeting between the two sides. Spain lead the overall head-to-head by 16 wins to six, with 12 games drawn.
All six of Portugal's wins, however, came on home soil, and tonight's clash will be only the third time the two sides have met outside of the Iberian Peninsula.
Their last meeting resulted in a 4-0 win for Portugal, and that defeat in Lisbon in November 2010 remains Spain’s heaviest defeat since 1963.
And Spain head to Donetsk aware they have won just two of their last 12 games against Portugal, while fourteen of their 16 wins came before 1960.
Many are comparing this game to a Barcelona v Real Madrid El Clasico clash. Spain have a number of Barcelona players in their squad, while Portugal have Real Madrid trio Cristiano Ronaldo, Fabio Coentrao, and centre-back Pepe in their ranks.
While many eyes will be on Ronaldo tonight, he has has failed to score in three previous appearances against Spain, including an extremely poor display at the 2010 World Cup.
Spain's Euro 2012 campaign has been criticised by some, and while nobody can question their excellent possession stats, their style of play during the tournament has at times been called boring.
Can the defending champions step it up tonight, or will Paulo Bento's side spring a surprise?
