Lucky England stand no chance of winning Euro 2012

England have fluked their way into the Euro 2012 quarter finals and will be taken down by Italy or Germany in the next few days, according to Matthew Glazier of BettingPro.com...

If you're lucky and you know it, clap your hands. England supporters, that is your cue to start applauding because the Three Lions have done nothing but fluke their way through Group D at Euro 2012 and will be beaten now that they are due to face a decent team.

An overrated France side penned England into their own half for much of their opening match of Euro 2012, with Roy Hodgson’s team content to sit on their 1-1 draw with Les Bleus and Steven Gerrard basically admitting before the game that they would take a point.

Then came the Sweden game, where Gerrard’s right peg was the only decent thing about England. The Liverpool captain put the ball on Andy Carroll’s head before the Three Lions made a dog’s dinner of two Swedish set pieces thanks to them thinking they had the game won.

At 2-1 down, it took an outrageous deflection from a hopeful Theo Walcott shot to level matters before the Arsenal winger misplaced a pass to Danny Welbeck only for the Manchester United man to scramble the ball across the line. Theo the super-sub? Don’t make me laugh!

Despite the cries of indignation from know-it-all England fans, Hodgson sensibly left out Walcott against Ukraine, knowing that his team would be on the back foot for much of the game.

The co-hosts piled on the pressure during the first half and Wayne Rooney’s goal came from a Gerrard cross which was deflected twice before fortunately finding its way to the back stick where the man known as Wazza nodded home.

Then we all chuckled as Ukraine were denied a perfectly good equaliser, although was there much merriment when Frank Lampard’s ‘ghost goal’ against Germany wasn’t awarded during the 2010 World Cup? Thought not.

England are a defensive team who rely on the right foot of Steven Gerrard to cross the ball in. The skipper is actually a central midfielder in this tournament who effectively pushes Walcott / Milner out of the way so that he can deliver a decent cross for Rooney, Welbeck, Carroll or the two central defenders.

This is not Roy Hodgson’s fault who has shown a great deal of pragmatism with the players at his disposal but spare me the jubilation over getting seven points in Group D. Spare me the knickers getting into a twist because scary Spain have been avoided.

If Italy don’t expose this overrated England team on Sunday, then Germany will have few problems dissecting the midfield and defence come the semi-finals.
